Women's Tennis Falls To Cornell, 5-2

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts women's tennis team (5-7, 2-0 A-10) fell at Cornell today, 5-2. Junior co-captain Sasha Edelstein (Haifa, Israel) and sophomore Dorothy Iwanowicz (Hilton Head, S.C.) both won their singles matches, but were the only point scorers for the Minutewomen.
In the singles matches, Edelstein defeated Erika Takeuchi 6-2, 6-3 in the #3 match, while Iwanowicz won in the #4 slot, 6-4, 6-4 over Kasi Preneta. Freshman Christine Liehr (Stuttgart, Germany) fell at the #1 spot, 6-0, 6-1 to Akane Kokubo, as junior Stephanie Price (Columbia, Mo.) lost to Laura Tallent, 6-4, 6-3 in the #2 spot. Senior co-captain Susan Hyams (Cincinnati, Ohio) at #5 and sophomore Jana Bartoloni (Charlestown, Mass.) at #6 both lost hard-fought battles in the tiebreaker, with Hyams falling 6-4, 1-6, 4-6, and Bartoloni losing 2-6, 6-0, 4-6.
In the doubles, Cornell won all three matches to earn the doubles point. Kokuba and Takeuchi took down Price and Iwanowicz in #1 doubles, 9-8, Liehr and Bartoloni fell 8-3 to Mollie Edison and Melissa Tu at the #2 spot. Hyams and Edelstein then fell 8-4 in the #3 match to Kara Maloy and Preneta.
The Minutewomen will be back in action Monday, March 15, as they travel to Boca Raton, Fla. to face Florida Atlantic in the first of three matches in the Sunshine State.
