Women's Tennis Defeats St. Bonaventure, 7-0

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts women's tennis team (5-5, 2-0 A-10) dropped the first two matches of their weekend series, as they fell to both Columbia on Friday and Army on Saturday, by a score of 5-2. The team then came back Sunday morning to easily defeat St. Bonaventure, 7-0.

In the match against St. Bonaventure, the Minutewomen began with a sweep of the doubles, to earn the doubles point. Junior Stephanie Price (Columbia, Mo.) and sophomore Dorothy Iwanowicz (Hilton Head, S.C.) won at the #1 spot, 8-1, while freshman Christine Liehr (Stuttgart, Germany) and sophomore Jana Bartoloni (Charlestown, Mass.) won the #2 match by the same score. In the #3 doubles, freshman Sadie Sandquist (Pocatello, Idaho) saw her first action of the season, as she teamed up with junior co-captain Sasha Edelstein (Haifa, Israel) to win, 8-5.

Massachusetts was able to put an exclamation point on the competition by sweeping through the singles matches as well, for a 7-0 win. Price won at #1 singles, 6-1, 7-5; Edelstein took the #2 match, 6-2, 6-1; Iwanowicz won at #3, 6-0, 6-2; senior co-captain Susan Hyams (Cincinnati, Ohio) won the #4 match, 6-2, 6-1; Bartoloni was victorious at #5, 6-3, 6-0 and Sandquist took the #6 match, 6-2, 6-4.

On Saturday, Army defeated the Minutewomen, 5-2. Edelstein and Hyams were the lone point scorers for UMass, as they won their respective singles matches. Edelstein took the #3 singles, 6-3, 6-3, while Hyams won at the #5 spot, 6-4, 0-6, 10-5.

On Friday afternoon, Columbia proved to be too much for UMass, as Price and Iwanowicz scored points for UMass. Price took the #2 match, 6-3, 6-4, 10-7, while Iwanowicz was victorious in the #4 match, 6-3, 6-4.



The Minutewomen will be back in action Saturday, March 6, as they travel to Ithaca, N.Y. for a neutral site match with UMBC, followed by an away match with Cornell on March 7.
