AMHERST, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts women's tennis team was defeated by Columbia University, 5-2, on Friday night at the Bay Road Tennis Center. The Minutewomen fall to 4-2 on the season.

UMass lost its first doubles point of the season last night. The pair of sophomore Michele Spiess (Stuttgart, Germany) and freshman Masha Pozar (Ljublijana, Slovenia) were the only victorious team, winning their fifth consecutive doubles match in the No. 1 slot.

Spiess also went on to win her No. 2 singles match by scores of 6-1, 3-6, 7-5. Junior Dorothy Iwanowicz (Hilton Head, S.C.) remained undefeated in singles competition with her win at the No. 4 slot, 6-0, 6-1.

UMass is back in action on Sunday, Feb. 20 when it hosts Seton Hall at 11:00 AM at Grande Meadows.
