Tennis Drops Close One To Army, 4-3

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The UMass tennis team (3-3) dropped their first of three matches this weekend against Army (6-2), 4-3, on Friday afternoon at the Lictchenberg Tennis Center in West Point, N.Y. Senior Candynce Boney won her match against Jamilia Paul, 1-4 (ret. -injury) for her 53rd career singles match win on Friday, putting her seventh all-time in the UMass tennis record books. Overall, UMass was able to split the singles matches but drop the doubles matches two sets to three.
In the singles matches, Army's No. 1 and No.2 singles players, Annie Houghton and Jessica Ahn, defeated UMass' Yuliana Motyl,6-4, 6-2, and Julia Comas,6-4, 3-6, 6-3. The No. 3 singles match was in favor of UMass' Candynce Boney because the match was called due to an injury on Army's Jamilia Paul. Clara Matias fell to Annie Hang in the No. 4 singles match,6-3, 7-5. In the No. 5 and No. 6 singles match, both of UMass' Jessica Podlofsky and Kaitlyn Carpenter, defeated the Black Knight's Della Taylor,4-6, 6-2, 6-3, and Margaret Iliey,6-1, 6-0.
As for the doubles matches, UMass' lone victory came with the duo of Motyl and Chantal Swiszcz against Robie Vollmer and Carly Riney in convincing fashion, 8-1.

The Umass tennis team continues its three-way match in West Point against the Knights of Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday, Feb. 19 at Litchenberg Tennis Center at 9 a.m.
