Women's Tennis Falls To Syracuse, 4-3

SYRACUSE, Mass. -The University of Massachusetts women's tennis team (0-1) dropped its match with Syracuse this afternoon 4-3. UMass won the available doubles point, but lost four of the six singles matches.
The #1 doubles team of senior Jenny Munroe (Valencia, Calif.) and junior Stephanie Price (Columbia, Mo.) took their match 8-5 over Trine Lise Juliussen and Wei-Ming Leong. Freshman Christine Liehr (Stuttgard, Germany) and sophomore Dorothy Iwanowicz (Hilton Head, S.C.) then lost in #2 doubles, 8-6, but co-captains senior Susan Hyams (Cincinnati, Ohio) and junior Sasha Edelstein (Haifa, Israel) logged an uncontested victory at #3 doubles to earn the doubles point for the team.
In the singles play, Syracuse took the match over, winning four of the six singles matches, with one of their losses coming in an uncontested match. At #1 singles, Edelstein fell to Juliussen, 6-1, 6-3, while Munroe was forced to drop out of her #2 singles match due to injury, with the score 6-1, 2-3. At the third singles position, Price fell 6-4, 6-3, while Iwanowicz won her #5 singles match, 6-1, 6-0. The best match of the day was the #4 singles match, as Liehr and Leong waged a three-set battle to decide the team victor. Leong got the best of Liehr, 6-2, 1-6, 7-5, as the Orange took the match, 4-3.
The Minutewomen will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 20, as they host Atlantic 10 rival Temple at the Bay Road Tennis Center. The match is scheduled to start at 7:30.
