Tennis Grabs Home Win Vs. NJIT, 6-1

AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass tennis team (3-1) won vs. NJIT (0-2), 6-1, at the Bay Road Tennis Club at Hampshire College on Super bowl Sunday. UMass controlled most of the Dual match by winning two of the three doubles matches and five of the six singles matches. Senior Candynce Boney, Sophomore Julia Comas, and Sophomore Chantal Swiszcz, all found success on the tennis court, winning both their singles and doubles matches.
In the doubles matches, the duos of Candynce Boney/ Julia Comas (9-8/(5)), and Yuliana Motyl / Chantal Swiszcz (9-7) won their matches in tough fashion and winning the first point of the Dual match. The lone loss came at the racquets of NJIT's Monika Graff / Hannelore MacDonald vs. Kaitlyn Carpenter / Tanisha Hodgson (8-5).
As for the singles matches, UMass was able to carry their momentum from the doubles courts onto the singles court, winning five of the six matches. Freshman Comas won in a tight No. 2 singles match, 6-4, 6-3. Senior Boney cruised in the No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-4. As for the No. 3 and No.4 singles match, Matias, 7-5, 6-4, and Carpenter, 6-3, 6-4, battled for hard fought wins. In the No. 6 singles, Sophomore Swiszcz rounded out the Dual match in straight sets, 6-2,6-1.
The Highlanders only victory came in the No. 1 singles, when Freshmen Kuzmenko defeated UMass' Freshmen Motyl, in a well played three sets, 3-6,7-6(9), 10-7.
The UMass tennis team moves forward into a weekend double-header, when they travel to face #41 Yale in the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center in Connecticut on Saturday, Feb. 12 and host Long Island at Bay Road Tennis Club at Hampshire College on Sunday, Feb. 13.
