AMHERST, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts women's tennis team was edged by Syracuse University on Sunday afternoon, 5-2, at the Bay Road Tennis Center. The Orange handed the Minutewomen their first loss in dual matches this season (4-1).

UMass swept Syracuse in doubles play, as freshman Masha Pozar (Ljublijana, Slovenia) and sophomore Michele Spiess (Stuttgart, Germany) won at No. 1 doubles. Junior Dorothy Iwanowicz (Hilton Head, S.C.) paired with junior Susan Johnson (Arnold, Md.) to win at No. 2 while junior Jana Bartoloni (Quincy, Mass.) and senior Sasha Edelstein (Haifa, Israel) were victorious at No. 3.

Iwanowicz notched the only singles victory of the day for the Minutewomen, as she defeated sophomore Carolina Huignard, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 4 singles. Pozar battled freshman Catherine Zawadzki at No. 2 singles, but fell, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

UMass is back in action on Friday, Feb. 18 when it hosts Columbia at 7:30 PM at the Bay Road Tennis Center.
