Feb. 2, 2014
AMHERST, Mass. - Following a 5-2 loss at Brown on Friday, the UMass tennis team ventured to Cambridge, Mass. for its second dual meet against an Ivy League opponent, facing Harvard on Saturday at 2:00 pm at the Murr Center. The Crimson swept the Minutewomen 7-0 to improve to 2-1 overall while UMass falls to 2-2 in dual-play for the season.
UMass has squared off against Harvard in dual play seven times in program history and has yet to win a match since the teams' first meeting in 1979.
UMass continued with the same doubles pairs from the previous match against Brown with Yuliana Motyl and Arielle Griffin in the No. 1 spot, followed by Sonia Bokhari and Anna Woosley, and Jessica Podlofsky and Chanel Glasper in No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. The Crimson swept the Minutewomen in doubles play to win the doubles point.
Harvard also swept UMass in singles in straight sets. Bokhari moved up to No. 1 singles on the afternoon suffering a 6-6, (3-0) loss that ended prematurely due to injury. Senior captain Motyl competed in No. 2 singles followed by Griffin in the No. 3 spot. Podlofsky, Glasper and Woosley completed the singles lineup for the afternoon, each suffering losses to the Ivy League opponent. Freshman Julia Larson also appeared in her first collegiate dual match on Saturday in an extra number seven singles match against Harvard's Sylvia Li.
The tennis team is back in action this weekend to host the first of four home matches beginning with Bryant University on Saturday and Long Island University on Sunday both with a 12:30 pm start time. Last season the squad went undefeated on home courts and hopes to continue the winning tradition this upcoming weekend.
