Meriza Werenski Named Atlantic 10 Women's Swimming Rookie Of The Week

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - George Mason's Fernando Rubio was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Performer of the Week, while Duquesne's Miriam McGeath and Richmond's Mali Kobelja were named the Women's Co-Performers of the Week the league announced on Tuesday. Also honored was Austin Nguyenphu of Saint Louis, who earned Men's Rookie of the Week honors, and Meriza Werenski of Massachusetts, who was named Women's Rookie of the Week. Awards were based off performances from Nov. 18-Nov. 24.
Werenski posted the fastest time in three individual events at the Terrier Invitational en route to her fourth A-10 rookie honor of the season. The South Hadley, Mass., native recorded first-place finishes in the 100-yd breaststroke (1:04.31), the 200-yd breaststroke (2:16.54) and the 400-yd IM (4:18.55) along with a second-place finish in the 200-yd IM (2:03.18). Werenski has now won gold in 11 of the 13 individual events she has competed in.
Rubio, a senior from Chester, Va., recorded an NCAA "B" standard time and set a meet record in the 400-yd individual medley with a time of 3:54.16 at this past weekend's Patriot Invitational. His performance in 400-yd IM was one of two first-place finishes along with the 800-yd freestyle relay (6:46.07). Rubio also recorded second-place finishes in both the 200-yd breaststroke (2:05.40) and the 200-yd IM (1:50.71).
McGeath, a senior from Roanoke, Va., set a meet record and qualified for the U.S. Winter Nationals with a time of 2:16.79 in the 200-yd breaststroke at the Cleveland State Invitational. McGeath recorded first-place finishes in both the 200-yd breaststroke and also the 400-yd IM with a time 4:23.68.
Kobelja, a senior from Fort Wayne, Ind., led the Spiders to a third-place showing at the Patriot Invitational with two event titles and a second-place finish. Kobelja set meet records in both the 200-yd breaststroke (2:17.36) and the 200-yd IM (2:01.78) en route to victories in each event. She also posted a second-place finish in 100-yd breaststroke with a time of 1:04.20.
Nguyenphu, a freshman from Southlake, Texas, shattered the Saint Louis school record in the 400-yd IM with a time of 3:56.95 at this past weekend's Missouri Invitational. He also set team top times in both the 200-yd breaststroke (2:06.01) and in the 200-yd IM (1:51.96).
