Meriza Werenski Named Atlantic 10 Women's Swimming Rookie Of The Week

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - George Mason's Fernando Rubio and St. Bonaventure's Jimmy Martin were named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Co-Performers of the Week, while Richmond's Mali Kobelja was selected as the league's Women's Swimming and Diving Performer of the Week. Also honored was Mason's Jesse Burnley, who earned Men's Rookie of the Week, and Meriza Werenski of Massachusetts who earned Women's Rookie of the Week, the league office announced for meets Oct.14-Oct. 20.

Werenski, a freshman from South Hadley, Mass., earned gold in three events over the weekend en route to scoring a team-high 27 points in the meet against Army.She finished first in the 500-yard freestyle (5:01.34), the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:16.77) and 200-yard IM (2:05.19). She has now won gold in five of her first six individual events as a collegiate swimmer and back-to-back Rookie of the Week honors from the league.

Rubio, a senior from Chester, Va., won three individual events in George Mason's first dual meet of the season, helping the Patriots defeat Delaware 163.5-136.5. Rubio recorded first-place finishes in the 500-yard freestyle (4:42.86), the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:38.98) and the 200-yard individual medley (1:54.84). He also anchored the 400-yard freestyle relay team that recorded a fourth-place finish.

Martin, a senior from Bristol, Conn., recorded four first-place finishes over the weekend as the Bonnies competed against Pittsburgh. Martin recorded first-place finishes in both the 50-yard (21.18) and 200-yard freestyles (1:43.06) along with anchoring both the 200-yard freestyle relay team and the 200-yard medley relay team as they recorded top place finishes.

Kobelja, a senior from Fort Wayne, Ind., played a major part in dual wins this past weekend against Duquesne and Oakland. Kobelja led the Spiders with two event titles in the 50-yard freestyle (24.14) and the 200-yard IM (2:06.34) alongwith a second-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.27).

 

 

Burnley recorded his first individual victory of the season in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:44.81 along with recording a second-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle. The Mechanicsville, Va., native was first off the blocks for Mason in both the 200-yard medley relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay as the Patriots finished in second and first place respectively in each event.

UMass will return to action when it hosts Binghamton Nov. 1-2 at the Joseph R. Rogers, Jr. Pool inside Boyden Gym.
