Michaela Butler, UMass Defensive Unit Named UMass Athletes Of The Week
Oct. 15, 2013
AMHERST, Mass. - Record-setting performances by diver Michaela Butler and a season-best outing by the football team's defensive unit are highlighted this week as the UMass Athletes of the Week. Butler set two Joseph R. Rogers pool records and broke the UMass one-meter dive record, while the football defensive unit propelled the Minutemen to a victory over Miami (Ohio) highlighted by three interceptions.
A senior All-American, Butler won both the one- and three-meter boards in record fashion to start off last Saturday's meet against Boston University. She helped UMass jump out to a 29-9 lead following the diving competition. Her score of 339.23 in the 3-meter broke her own pool record, while she followed with a 336.23 in the 1-meter to lay claim to the school and pool benchmarks. UMass snapped a seven-year dual meet losing streak to BU, defeating the Terriers for the first time since Oct. 2005 with a 155-145 score.
Several players from the UMass defense stood out individually last Saturday in the 17-10 win over Miami (Ohio). Khary Bailey-Smith had two interceptions and 10 tackles, while fellow safety Devin Brown had seven tackles and an interception. Stanley Andre led all players with a career-high 14 tackles, while Justin Anderson had seven tackles and became the first player in 11 years to have 2-or-more sacks in back-to-back games.
The 10 points allowed by the defense was a season-low as were the 290 yards of total offense by the Redhawks.
The Weekly UMass Sports Luncheon will be held in the Massachusetts Room of the Mullins Center (3rd Floor) from Noon to 1:15 on Wednesday afternoons.
