Michaela Butler Takes Fifth On 1-Meter At AT&T National Diving Championships
Aug 14, 2013
IOWA CITY, Iowa - Massachusetts senior Michaela Butler finished fifth in the 1-meter on the opening day of competition at the AT&T National Diving Championships Tuesday.
Butler, a native of Dennisport, Mass. who took fourth in the NCAA Championships in the same event five months ago, scored a 247.25 at the University of Iowa's Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Pool. She was fourth after the preliminaries before the scores reset for the finals.
"She did very well and I was real proud of her performance, especially since it's her first senior national appearance," UMass Diving Coach Mandy Hixon said. "She was the only one to do a reverse two-and-a-half in the finals, which is pretty hard for a woman to execute."
Maren Taylor, a 2013 World Championship team member, scored 296.10 points to edge two of her Team USA teammates for the gold. Deidre Freeman picked up the silver at 287.15 and Amanda Burke was third at 285.45, with Meghan Houston was fourth at 257.20.
The AT&T National Diving Championships continue through Sunday, August 18. Butler will return to action on Thursday in the 3-meter competition. The preliminaries begin at 10 a.m. Central Time, with the top 18 advancing to the semifinals, set for 5:30 p.m. The top 12 will then advance to Sunday's finals.
