AMHERST, Mass. - The 2012 Pan Mass Challenge ride is once again around the corner. This will be my fifth year riding and I am dedicating my ride in two ways.

First, I am honoring the memory of my parents. Sixteen years ago cancer took my father and this past winter my mother lost her battle. My family came together in December to celebrate the life of my mother and this August I will continue the celebration by riding the PMC again.

Secondly, and closest to us all in our UMass family, I will ride for Elaine Sortino. Elaine has been a cornerstone of the Athletic Department for more that 30 years and a coach who has, year after year, produced some of the most successful teams and individuals we have seen. This winter she has gone through her biggest challenge and her absence left a hole in the normal routine around the halls of Boyden. The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute became her weekly destination and has given her the chance to return to health and work. I was happy to see her door open once again.

The PMC is the single largest contributor to the Jimmy Fund at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Dana-Farber is one of the leading hospitals in the country for cancer research and treatment. Last year, the PMC raised over $35,000,000. This year on the weekend of August 4th and 5th, I will be one of over 5000 riders who will be making our way across Massachusetts to raise money for cancer research. In order for me to participate again, I need to raise $4300. As always, ONE HUNDRED PERCENT of the money I raise will go directly to the Jimmy Fund. Any size contribution will be greatly appreciated.

I will ride with the names of my parents and Elaine on my jersey. A picture from my 2011 shirt is on the back of this letter or on my PMC profile. If you would like to dedicate your donation to Elaine or someone you know that has been affected by cancer I would be happy to put their name(s) on my shirt also. My first year I rode with 18 names, last year there were 33. Just send me the name(s) along with your contribution and together we can all ride.

Your tax-deductible donation can be made in several ways. A check made out to "PMC/Jimmy Fund" can be sent directly to me or you can put it campus mail or the Women's Swimming box in the Boyden mailroom. You can also make a credit card donation on the internet at www.PMC.org. Click on the egift button in the upper left corner and use my egift code- BN0032. Donations can be made anytime until October 1st.

Feel free to call or email me if you have any questions. So many have helped us accomplish this over the years. Thank you for the support you can provide.
