Michaela Butler Receives UMass Athlete Of The Week Honors Following NCAA Appearance
March 25, 2013
The UMass Sports Luncheon Committee named Michaela Butler the UMass Athlete of the Week, Monday afternoon, following her performance at the 2013 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. This is Butler's second Athlete of the Week nomination in as many weeks. She will be recognized on Wednesday March 27 in the Massachusetts Room of the Mullins Center. The luncheon will begin at noon, with free parking available to all at the rear of the building.
Butler participated in the national meet, registering a fourth-place finish in the one-meter springboard and a 14th-place finish in the three-meter springboard. The Dennisport, Mass native became the highest scoring swimming and diving athlete in Atlantic 10 history, pulling in 18 points over her two days of diving. Her fourth-place finish on the one-meter board also makes her the first All-American in both conference and school history.
On the first day of competition, the one-meter board, Butler broke her school record in the preliminary round. She picked up a total of 309.05 points and putting her in sixth-place and qualifying her for championship finals. The redshirt junior would go on to break that record again with her championship round score of 333.45, putting her in fourth-place, only 2.31 points off the bronze medal.
On the three-meter board, Butler fell just short of qualifying for the championship finals with her 10th-place finish in prelims. She went on to finish 14th overall, out of a field of 39 divers, with a score of 326.55.
The speakers of Wednesday's luncheon will be women's lacrosse head coach Angela McMahon, men's track and field coach Ken O'Brien and women's track and field coach Julie Lafreniere.
