Feb. 25, 2013
AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass Sports Luncheon committee named Michaela Butler, Hao Luong and Cady Lalanne co-Athletes of the Week following their exceptional performances this past week. Butler and Luong each helped the men's and women's swimming and diving teams to second-place finishes at the Atlantic 10 Championships, while Lalanne posted career-high numbers in the men's basketball win over Dayton, Saturday. The group will be honored on Wednesday February 27 at noon from the Massachusetts Room in the Mullins Center.
Butler helped the Minutewomen to their first second-place finish at the Atlantic 10 Championships since 2007. The native of Dennisport, Mass. defended her one- and three-meter diving titles and was named the A-10 Diver of the Year for the second-straight season. Butler capped off an undefeated season with the gold medal in the one-meter dive with a score of 274.35 and gold in the three-meter with a score of 314.95. Butler will now prepare for the NCAA Zone A Diving Meet held at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center on the campus of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University from March 15-17.
Luong had a great week at the Atlantic 10 Championships, helping the Minutemen to a second-place finish. Luong, of Malden, Mass., medaled in each one of his individual events. Perhaps his most impressive swim of the week came in the 200-yard butterfly, in which he took the bronze medal and knocked off the oldest record in the UMass books, swimming the first sub-1:50 time, coming in at 1:49.05. He also picked up the silver medal in the 200-yard backstroke, clocking in at 1:46.08, setting a school record and qualifying with an NCAA B standard. He set another school record in the 100-yard backstroke, coming in at 49.56, and taking the bronze medal.
Lalanne averaged a double-double last week, posting 16.5 points and 10.0 rebounds as men's hoops went 1-1. He turned in the best game of his career on Saturday, leading UMass to a big win over Dayton, snapping a three-game losing streak with his 22 points, 14, rebounds in a career-best 35 minutes. For the week, he shot 13-for-17 for .765 shooting.
The group will be honored on Wednesday February 27 at noon from the Massachusetts Room in the Mullins Center. The speakers this week are men's lacrosse head coach Greg Canella and baseball head coach Mike Stone. There will be free parking at the rear of the Mullins Center for all those who wish to attend.
