Liz Lovejoy Named UMass/Dinn Bros. Athlete of the Week
Jan. 17, 2006
AMHERST, Mass. - For her efforts in the UMass women's swim team's win at the Rhode Island Invitational, junior Liz Lovejoy (Reading, Mass.) was named the UMass/Dinn Bros. Athlete of the Week. Lovejoy had two first place finishes, led UMass to two first-place relay wins, and a second-place finish in a third relay event.
Lovejoy posted career-best times in her wins in the 200-yard fly (2:08.84) and in the 100-yard freestyle (53.77 seconds). Her time in the 200-yard fly was the fourth-fastest mark in UMass history.
She also helped the Minutewomen to two first-place finishes in the 200-yard free relay and in the 400-yard free relay, and a second-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay.
Her time in the 100-yard freestyle was also a career-best time, but fell just 0.14 second shy of the 10th fastest time in school history.
This was a crucial meet for the Minutewomen as they picked up wins against A-10 foes Rhode Island, George Washington, and La Salle as they begin preparing for the Atlantic 10 Championship Meet in February.
Lovejoy will be honored at the UMass Sports Luncheon on Wednesday, January 18 held in the Cape Cod Room of the Student Union beginning at Noon. Men's basketball head coach Travis Ford, women's basketball coach Marnie Dacko, and ice hockey coach Don "Toot" Cahoon are the scheduled speakers.
Tickets for the full salad-to-dessert meal are $7.00 and reservations can be made by calling 413-545-4290.
