Jan. 13, 2014
AMHERST, Mass. - On Monday afternoon the UMass Sports Luncheon Committee honored track and field's Becky Stoyle and swimming and diving's Meriza Werenski for their individual efforts over the weekend. Becky Stoyle highlighted her team's success in their first meet of the indoor season while Meriza Werenski shined in the pool following her team's annual training trip to Puerto Rico.
Stoyle finished first of 24 competitors in the triple jump at the Yale Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The junior leaped a mark totaling 40-feet, 0.5-inches qualifying her for the New England and ECAC Championship. She now holds the best mark in the A-10 thus far and ranks 21st in the country. Stoyle enters the 2014 season as the reigning indoor and outdoor A-10 and New England Champion in the event.
"After Saturday's competition I feel very confident our team will perform well this season." Stoyle said when asked about the unscored season opener. "We have set goals for ourselves and we are working hard to reach them. I feel the results from the Yale Invitational show that and we plan improve week-to-week."
Werenski continued her outstanding freshman campaign with three individual wins at the Rhode Island Invitational. The South Hadley, Mass. native won gold in the 200 and 400 IM and the 200 breast. Werenski currently holds the fastest time in the Atlantic 10 for the 400 IM, ranks second in the 200 IM and is fourth in both, the 100 and 200 breast events.
Stoyle is set to compete again this Saturday, January 18 in Kingston, R.I. at the Sorlien Invitational. The meet is slated for an 11:00 a.m. start.
Werenski is also back in action on Saturday, January 18 in Smithfield, R.I. at Bryant with a start time set for 1:00 p.m.
