Swim Teams Compete At Nutmeg Invitational

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The University of Massachusetts swim teams traveled to New Haven, Conn., this weekend to compete in the Nutmeg Invitational. The men's team took 12 events, while the women won seven. There was no team scoring at the meet.
The Minutemen were led by junior Dylan Smith (Timonium, Md.) and freshmen Greg Chartier (Amherst, Mass.) and Gordon Leonard (Cinnaminson, N.J.), who each won two events. Smith took the top spot in the 100-yard fly with a mark of 51.80, while his time of 1:53.39 placed him first in the 200-yard fly. Chartier swam a time of 4:38.48 to win the 500-yard free and then followed with a first-place finish in the 400-yard individual medley, with a mark of 4:05.08. Leonard was the fastest swimmer in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyles, posting winning times of 21.91 and 47.81, respectively. Also contributing to the Minuteman effort with one win each was senior captain Pete Tawczynski (Holden, Mass.) and freshmen Jake Hogue (Grand Junction, Colo.) and Evan Swisher (N. Bennington, Vt.). Minuteman teams also were victorious in three relay events. The 400-yard medley relay was won by the team of Swisher, Tawczynski, Smith and junior Ryan Matthews (Rumson, N.J.) in a time of 3:32.19. This same group of swimmers was also responsible for the 200-yard medley relay victory, posting a mark of 1:35.84. The 800-yard freestyle relay was taken by the team of junior Owen Scollen (Lowell, Mass.), Smith, Chartier and sophomore Drew Martorano (Quincy, Mass.), in a time of 7:02.30.
On the women's side, senior captains Diana Alberti (Wantagh, N.Y.) and Lauren Rowell (Hamburg, N.Y.) each posted two victories over the weekend. Alberti took the top spot in the 100-yard fly, posting a time of 59.15. She then swam to first place in the 200-yard fly as well, recording a time of 2:07.42. Both of these times marked season bests. Rowell finished first in the 200-yard IM, registering a time of 2:09.93, while her mark of 2:09.06 in the 200-yard back also was good for a first-place finish. Both of her times were season bests as well. Alberti and Rowell were also members of the winning 200-yard medley relay team, swimming the third and first legs, respectively. They were joined by fellow senior captain Christen Dexter (Centerville, Mass.) and sophomore Aimee Bourassa (Ottawa, Ontario). The team finished in a time of 1:49.76. The Minutewomen also won two other relay events at the meet. The team of freshman Liz Lovejoy (Reading, Mass.), sophomore Kelly Hoffrage (St. Charles, Ill.), freshman Laura Whelton (Wrentham, Mass.) and Bourassa was the fastest in the 800-yard freestyle relay, posting a time of 8:03.82. In the 200-yard free relay, it was freshman Nicole LeBarge (Lee, N.H.) joining Lovejoy, Hoffrage and Bourassa, to post a mark of 1:38.83 for the victory.
The men's and women's swim teams will be in action next on Sunday, Jan. 4, as they travel to San Juan, Puerto Rico, for the San Juan Invitational.
