UMass Swimming Splits At Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y.- The University of Massachusetts men's swimming team defeated Syracuse University, 140-137, as senior Tommy Keane (Melrose, Mass.) and sophomore Peter Tawczynski (Holden, Mass.) led the way with two wins apiece. The Minutewomen dropped to SU, 140-192.

Keane won the 500-yard free (4:37.80) and 1650-yard free (16:31.87) and Tawczynski won the 400-yard IM (4:03.84) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:05.77) to lift the Minutemen to their fourth victory of the season. Tawczynski's 200 breast time moves him into fifth on the UMass all-time charts. Also winning events for the UMass men's team were seniors Rob Bellamy (Columbia, Md.) in the 200-yard free (1:43.13) and Ryan Zaucha (Auburn, Calif.) in the 100-yard back (52.66). The men's 800-yard free relay team posted a victory as well, winning the event in a time of 6:59.73.

The UMass women's team recorded two individual wins versus SU, as senior Andrea Kazanjian (Troy, N.Y.) and junior Lizzy Boyle (Darien, Conn.) posted victories for the Maroon and White. Kazanjian won the 100-yard free (54.54) and Boyle recorded her first win of the season in the 50-yard free (24.71). The women's 200-yard free relay team also picked up a win (1:39.20) to keep UMass within striking distance.

The Minutemen improve their record to 4-1 on the season while the Minutewomen slip to 3-3. The women's team returns to action Jan. 5 as they compete in the Miami Invitational. The men's team is off until the Rhode Island Invitational, Jan. 11-12.
