UMass Divers Sweep Springboard Titles At Frank Elm Invitational

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - UMass divers Michaela Butler and Josh Koppel remained undefeated on the season as both athletes won the two springboard competitions at the Frank Elm Invitational at Rutgers this weekend.
Butler was solid in the 3-meter event as she posted another 300-plus score, 327.25, in taking first on Friday. In Saturday's 1-meter, she remained the only diver in the Atlantic 10 to score over a 300 this year as the senior from Dennisport, Mass. claimed gold in the eight-person field.
Koppel opened his portion the meet by taking first in the 1-meter with a season-high score of 316.55. He came back a day later and posted a career-best 349.90 on the 3-meter.
Other performances for the Minutewomen included Mikhaila Eckhardt scoring a career-high 279.85 in the prelims of the 3-meter and winning third in the 3-meter, Rachel Dushman taking fifth on the 3-meter and eighth on the 1-meter, while Rhiannon Froman and Julia Jagannath were each seventh in the 1-meter and 3-meter, respectively.
On the men's side, the UMass freshman quartet of Niles Ackerman, Robert Barry, Nolan Burns and Alex Walder all competed. Barry was fourth in the 1-meter and fifth in the 3-meter, Burns posted career-highs tallies in both boards, finishing fifth in the 1-meter and sixth in the 3-meter. Ackerman and Walder also scored team points for UMass as they both competed in their first college competition.
