Swim Teams Defeat Boston University

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts men's and women's swim teams both defeated Boston University at home this afternoon, 200-100, and 154-146, respectively.
Leading the men were junior Dylan Smith (Timonium, Md.) and freshman Greg Chartier (Amherst, Mass.), who each won three events. Smith took the 100-yard fly with a time of 52.33, won the 200-yard back with a mark of 1:59.60, and then was victorious in the 200-yard free, posting a time of 1:46.20. Chartier achieved the top spot in the 200-yard IM (1:57.16), was fastest in the 500-yard free (4:46.95) and posting the winning time of 9:52.66 in the 1000-yard free. Freshman Gordon Leonard (Cinnaminson, N.J.) also put in a strong performance, winning the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 48.95, while also taking the top spot in the 100-yard backstroke, registering a mark of 55.49. Freshmen Mike Cordes (Highland Lakes, N.J.) and Jake Hogue (Grand Junction, Colo.) each posted a single victory as well. The men also won both of their relay events.
For the women, sophomore Aimee Bourassa (Ottawa, Ont.) was the top swimmer, taking first-place in two events. She won both the 500-yard and 1000-yard freestyle events, with times of 5:16.81 and 10:50.07, respectively. The Minutewomen received contributions from several other swimmers as well. Senior captains Diana Alberti (Wantagh, N.Y.), Christen Dexter (Centerville, Mass.) and Lauren Rowell (Hamburg, N.Y.) all won one event, as did sophomore Kelly Hoffrage (St. Charles, Ill.). The women won one relay event, and fell just short, finishing second, in the other.
In the diving events, junior Brandon Doane (Danvers, Mass.) won the one-meter dive with a score of 261.60, and placed second in the three-meter, posting a mark of 264.68. For the women, senior Joanna Walsh (Spencer, Mass.) placed third in the 1 meter dive with a score of 198.9. A mark of 198.97 placed freshman Mary Jenkins (Acton, Mass.) third in the three-meter dive.
The UMass swimming and diving teams will be back in action on Saturday, Nov. 22, as they host St. John's at Joseph R. Rogers, Jr. pool in Boyden Gymnasium. The meet begins at 1:00 p.m.
