Men's Swimming Finishes Second, Women Third at UConn Huskie Invitational

STORRS, Conn. - Greg Chartier, Justin Zeimetz, and Owen Swisher each picked up individual titles to lead the UMass men's swimming and diving team to a second-place finish at the UConn Huskie Invitational, while Nicole LeBarge won the 50-yard freestyle leading the women's team to a third-place finish on Saturday.
The meet was the first of the year for both teams.
Chartier, Zeimetz, and Swisher each earned victories to lead the Minutemen.
Chartier won the 400-yard individual medley in 4:14.77 defeating Mike McNulty of UConn by almost two seconds. Swisher recorded a narrow victory in the 100-yard backstroke with a 53.26 second effort, just over seven-tenths of a second faster than UConn's Bobby Folan. Zeimetz picked up his first title of the season in the 50-yard freestyle touching first in 21.23 seconds.
Zeimetz added a third-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle (48.69) and a fourth-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke (56.91).
A second-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke (1:59.67), a second-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley (2:01.95) and a third-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly rounded out Chartier's performance on the day.
Jake Hogue turned in a trio of fourth place finishes (400-yard individual medley, 100-yard breaststroke, 200-yard individual medley) and a third-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:16.04).
LeBarge led the women with a win in the 50-yard freestyle sprinting to a 25.13 second finish. She also finished fifth in the 100-yard butterfly (54.72).
Kelly Hoffrage posted a pair of fourth-place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle (1:58.38) and the 100-yard butterfly (54.57) and a third-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley (2:13.48).
Samantha Demty added two third-place finishes in the 200-yard butterfly (2:11.55) and the 100-yard butterfly (59.74).
Rounding out the Minutewomen's top performances on the day were Aimee Bourass with a fifth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.13), Lynette Sweeney posting a fifth-place finish in the 400-yard individual medley (4:50.75), Susan Allen finishing third in the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.36), Vanessa Fleguel placing third in the 200-yard backstroke (2:13.44), and Laura Whelton swimming to a fifth-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle (5:32.21).
In the relay events, the women's 200-yard medley relay team swam a 1:51.94 and the men's team posted a time of 1:39.38 giving both squads third-place finishes. In the 400-yard freestyle relay, the men's team finished third (3:17.88), while the women's team finished fourth (3:44.85).
