UMass Swimmers Strong At Season-Opening UConn Invitational

STORRS, Conn. - The UMass swim teams kicked-off the 2006-07 season at the UConn Invitational on Friday afternoon. Both teams had strong showings at the meet which was a non-scored event. Evan Swisher won both the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard backstroke, while Nate Bromage took the 200-yard freestyle. Liz Lovejoy won the 100-yard butterfly, while Sam Demty placed in the top-five in three events.
In women's action, Lovejoy won the 100 fly in 59.26 seconds. She also took third in the 200 free (1:57.12), third in the 500 free (5:23.68) and swam the lead leg of the second-place 200-yard freestyle relay team.
Demty had a solid all-around performance with a third-place finish in the 200-yard fly (2:13.77), a fourth-place finish in the 400-yard individual medley (4:46.36) and a second-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley (2:16.15).
Other strong performers at the meet included Cecelia Jenkins taking second in the 50-yard free and Christa Narus taking second in the 100-yard fly and third in the 200-yard individual medley. Narus also swam the anchor leg of the 200 free relay team.
For the men, Swisher won the 100 breast with a time of 1:02.70 and the 200 back with a time of 1:54.94 as the only two-event winner for UMass at the meet. Bromage won the 200 free in a time of 1:46.47 and also took fourth in the 50-yard free (22.04 seconds) and second in the 100 fly (51.77 seconds).
Other top performers for the men included John Weaver taking second in the 100-yard breaststroke, Tim Smith taking third in the 100 back, and Brad Sloan's second-place finish in the 400 individual medley.
