Michaela Butler Qualifies For NCAA Championships

CHRISTIANBURG, Va. - Massachusetts senior diver Michaela Butler is headed back to college swimming and diving's biggest stage.
Butler was second in the 1-meter springboard at the NCAA Zone A Diving Meet at the Christianburg Aquatic Center with a score of 594.80. Her second-place finish advances her to the 2014 NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships, held March 20-22 at the Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis.
The Dennisport, Mass. native finished fourth in the 1-meter and 14th in the 3-meter at last year's NCAA Championships, becoming the first All-American in both UMass and Atlantic 10 women's swimming & diving history.
Fellow UMass diver Mikhaila Eckhardt finished 23rd in the prelims with a score of 219.15. The top 18 advanced to the finals.
Both Butler and Eckhardt are scheduled for the 3-meter event on Tuesday.
In the men's competition, sophomore Josh Koppel finished the 3-meter prelims just out of the top 18, scoring a 288.75 and 20th place. He will compete in the 1-meter event on Tuesday.
