Massachusetts Swimming Sweeps Fordham

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts swimming and diving teams defeated Fordham University Saturday afternoon at Joseph R. Rogers pool. The Minutemen handed the Rams a 187-110 loss while the Minutewomen topped Fordham, 184-112.
The Minutemen were led by junior Justin Houck (Wyomissing, Pa.) and freshman Dylan Smith (Timonium, Md.) with two individual wins apiece. Houck won the 100-yard backstroke (53.16) and 200-yard backstroke (1:56.08) while also placing second in the 200-yard IM. Smith placed first in the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:53.44) and 200-yard butterfly (1:53.88). Other standout performances included junior Rob Bellamy (Columbia, Md.) who swam the fastest time of the day in the 500-yard freestyle as did freshman Ryan Matthews (Rumson, N.J.) in the 100-yard freestyle (48.52). Sophomores Logan Alomar (Silver Spring, Md.) and Damion Stoy (Pocono Pines, Pa.) won the one-meter and three-meter dive events, respectively. The men's 200-yard medley relay team was also victorious behind the efforts of sophomores Sean Collins (North Reading, Mass.) and Conner Townsend (Memphis, Tenn.) and freshmen Andrey Kurmakov (Brookline, Mass.) and Matthews (1:38.13).
On the women's side, senior Becky Hunnewell (Sandwich, Mass.) led the way with wins in the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.03) and 200-yard backstroke (2:06.99). Juniors Lauren Bulkeley (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Kate Allery (South Hadley, Mass.) were also double-winners for the Minutewomen as Bulkeley won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.04) and 100-yard butterfly (59.71) and Allery won both the one-meter and three-meter dive events.
Other UMass wins came from senior Anne Dettloff (Barrington, Ill.) in the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.97), sophomore Diana Alberti (Wantagh, N.Y.) in the 200-yard butterfly (2:10.62), sophomore Christen Dexter (Centerville, Mass.) in the 200-yard breaststroke and freshman Lynette Sweeney (Plymouth, Mass.) in the 200-yard IM (2:14.86). The 200-yard medley relay team also recorded a win as senior Andrea Kazanjian (Troy, N.Y.) junior Lizzy Boyle (Darien, Conn.) and sophomores Lauren Rowell (Hamburg, N.Y.) and Dexter posted a time of 1:51.69.
UMass returns to action Feb. 21-23 as they compete in the Atlantic 10 Championship meet in Buffalo, N.Y. Last season, the Minutemen captured their fourth A-10 Championship crown while the Minutewomen captured their first A-10 title. Hunnewell was named 2000-01 Atlantic 10 Performer of the Meet for her efforts.
