Massachusetts Takes Third At Dartmouth Invitational
Jan. 26, 2014
WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. - The Massachusetts Minutewomen scored 756.5 points over 19 events to finish third at the Dartmouth Invitational at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center.
Dartmouth won the six-team event with 1106 points. Northeastern was just ahead of UMass with 778, Boston College was fourth at 364, followed by Connecticut College at 305 and Maine at 249.
Friday's opening session saw freshman Meriza Werenski win the 200 individual medley in 2:05.97. That time was good enough for a pool record as she out-touched Northeastern's Anna Schegoleva, who set the record in last year's event. She also scored high points with a runner-up time of 1:06.24 in the 100 breast before leading a one-two UMass finish in the 200 breast in 2:22.31 - with Katie Arnott taking second in 2:23.88.
Two of the five events on Friday were relays - the 200 free and 400 medley. UMass finished second in each race.
After the team took third in the 200 medley top open Saturday's morning session, Werenski took home the 400 IM in 4:33.06 - more than three seconds ahead of the next finisher.
Jocelyn Yuen turned in a strong meet that included a second place finish in the 100 butterfly early on Saturday and a first-place time of 2:06.00 in the 200 fly in her final swim of the afternoon session.
Michaela Butler led the UMass diving contingent to a pair of huge point totals in both boards. She remained undefeated on the year with wins in the 1- and 3-meter events, with Mikhaila Eckhardt and Rhiannon Froman placing second and third, respectively in both boards.
Rebecca Quirie finished third in the 200 back in 2:09.69 and fourth in the 100 back in 59.14. She was also a member of the second-place 400 medley relay and third place 200 medley relay groups.
Molly Smyth continued to improve from race-to-race as evidence by her fourth-place finish in the 500 free. Her time of 5:03.74 was just 1.2 back of first. She also was third in the 1650 free in 17:35.99.
The Minutewomen will conclude their regular-season at home on Saturday, Feb. 1 when they face Fordham. The Senior Day meet will begin at 1 p.m.
