Swimming And Diving Splits Against Boston College On Saturday

AMHERST, Mass. - On the strength of 14 event victories, the University of Massachusetts men's swimming and diving team rolled over Boston College, 212-88, on Saturday at the Joseph R. Rogers, Jr. pool. The women's team won five events, but fell 177-123 to the Eagles.
The Minutemen's 212- 88 effort over Boston College was led by the performances of double-winners seniors Justin Zeimetz (Rochester, N.H.) and Dylan Smith (Timonium, Md.), and sophomore Evan Swisher (North Bennington, Vt.).
Zeimetz tallied victories in the 100-yard backstroke (52.23) and the 100-yard freestyle (46.42). Smith placed first in the 200 fly (1:54.82) and the 100 fly (51.82), while Swisher took the 200 back (1:51.60) and the 200 IM (1:58.67).
Sophomores Greg Chartier (Amherst, Mass.) and Jake Hogue (Grand Junction, Colo.), senior Ryan Matthews (Rumson, N.J.), and freshman Derek Castellana (Bedford, Mass.) also tallied victories. Chartier took the 1,000 free in 9:59.60, while Hogue took the 200 breaststroke in 2:09.97. Matthews earned his victory in the 50 free (21.74) and Castellana clocked in with a 4:45.17 in the 500 free. Freshman Reuben Rappe (Farmington, Minn.) was victorious in the one-meter dive (272.10) and senior Brandon Doane (Danvers, Mass.) placed first in the three-meter dive (303.23).
The Minutemen also took both relay events. The team of Swisher, sophomore Mike Cordes (Highland Lakes, N.J.), Smith and Zeimetz took the 200-yard medley relay in the 1:35.23, while Matthews, senior Owen Scollan (Lowell, Mass.), sophomore Gordon Leonard (Cinnaminson, N.J.) and freshman AJ Vozella (Weymouth, Mass.) combined for a 3:10.28 to take the 400 free relay.
Bourassa took the 1,000 free in 10:46.45 and Hoffrage took the 200 free in 1:57.06. Allen earned first in the 100 back with a time of 1:02.31.
Sophomore diver Mary Jenkins (Acton, Mass.) took first in both diving events. She scored a 264.15 in the one meter dive and a 224.02 in the three meter dive.
The women's team was originally schedule to take on Central Connecticut State on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at the Joseph R. Rogers, Jr. Pool, but due to the winter storm which has affected the region, the teams have pushed that meet to Monday night at 6:00 p.m. Both the UMass men's and women's teams will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 29 as they travel to Fordham for their final regular season meet before the Atlantic 10 Championships.
