June 5, 2014
CHICAGO - UMass softball signee Megan Colleran was named the Massachusetts Softball Player of the Year, as announced by The Gatorade Company, in collaboration with USA TODAY High School Sports, on Thursday.
Colleran is a senior at North Attleboro High School where she has compiled a 17-3 record and a 0.33 earned run average while leading the Rocketeers to the semifinals of the state's Division I South sectionals. North Attleboro will face Franklin at Taunton HS on Saturday at 3 p.m.
Through 20 games, Colleran fanned 237 batters and issued just 17 walks in 151 innings pitched. Her 776 career strikeouts are a school record, and she needs only eight more to match North Attleboro's single-season mark of 245.
She also has a .451 batting average with 13 extra-base hits, 20 runs scored and 29 RBI entering the weekend.
The award has been recognizing the top softball players since 1998.
