Sara Plourde Grabs Final Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week Award

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Atlantic 10 Conference named La Salle sophomore Megan Hodgson its Softball Player of the Week, senior Sara Plourde of Massachusetts its Pitcher of the Week and Saint Joseph's freshman Melissa Ruf as the league's Rookie of the Week. The A-10 announced the awards, the final of the season, Monday for games played April 30 - May 6.
Plourde extended her winning streak to 18 games with four wins and a 0.55 ERA. She posted three seven-inning complete games and a marathon 17-inning complete game, allowing just three earned runs in 38 innings pitched. The Bristol, Conn., native had an impressive 53 strikeouts, tallying double-digit Ks in all but one game. She opened the week with a shutout of Boston University and then beat Fordham (the second seed in the upcoming A-10 Championship) twice and La Salle once, allowing just one run in each game.
Offensively for the week, she had five hits with two home runs and four RBI as the Bristol, Conn. native increased her A-10 HR total to a league best 10 in 19 games.
On the season, she is 33-9 with a 1.76 ERA. She continues to lead the nation in strikeouts with 487 and opponent batting average at .114. She concluded A-10 play at 18-0 and a 0.86 ERA with seven shutouts, three no-hitters and an opponent batting average of .095.
This marks her eighth Pitcher of the Week honor this season and 17th all-time of her career, to go along with a pair of Rookie of the Week nods in 2009.
Hodgson, who plays both outfielder and shortstop for the Explorers, batted .500 for the week, hitting 6-for-12 with four runs scored and six RBI. The Spring City, Pa., native also hit two home runs and had one steal in helping La Salle sweep Rhode Island in a 2-2 week. Her best game of the week was a 2-for-4 performance with five RBI and a home run versus the Rams.
Ruf hit an incredible .867 (6-of-7) in a pair of wins for the Hawks over St. Bonaventure last week. She went 2-for-3 in game one, scoring three runs and collecting a stolen base. She was perfect in game two, batting 4-for-4 with three more runs and two RBI. A Landenberg, Pa., native, Ruf scored six runs and two RBI for the week to help Saint Joseph's clinch the sixth seed in the 2012 A-10 Championship.
