Three Minutewomen Earn Atlantic 10 All-Conference Honors, Jena Cozza Named Rookie Of The Year

AMHERST, Mass. - Massachusetts freshman infielder Jena Cozza was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, while senior outfielder Lindsey Webster and freshman pitcher Tara Klee were also named to the All-Atlantic 10 squad in a vote of the league's head coaches and announced by the A-10 Tuesday.
Cozza becomes the 10th UMass player to earn the award and second in the last three years, joining current junior Quianna Diaz-Patterson. It also markes the ninth-consecutive season a UMass player has landed on the all-rookie team since the league began the award in 2006.
The freshman from Wantagh, N.Y. is leads the team with a .356 batting avg. and is ranks 10th in the league. In 16 league games, she hit a robust .442 to place fourth in the rankings. Cozza has four home runs, 20 RBI and five doubles.
She has saved her best for last in this strong campaign, hitting .410 over the last 25 games. She has a .956 fielding pct. while splitting time at second and third base all season.
Webster earned second team honors as an outfielder, following similar accolades at designated player last year and all-rookie honors in 2011. The Northridge, Calif. native ranks third on team with 5 home runs and a .545 slugging pct. She leads the team with .435 on-base pct. and 8 times being hit by a pitch.
For her career, Webster ranks ninth in UMass history with 22 round-trippers and fifth with a .545 slugging pct.
Klee has compiled a 6-5 record in her first season in Amherst. Additionally, she has posted an undefeated 4-0 mark in seven A-10 starts with 3 complete gamest The Hanburg, Pa. native's .285 opponent batting average ranks 12th in A-10. Among freshman starting pitchers, she ranks first in opp. BA, second in innings pitched and third in wins and ERA.
UMass opens play in the 2014 A-10 Championship on Wednesday against Dayton. First pitch is set for Noon at Bahoshy Field on the campus of Fordham University.
