AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts rowing program's Varsity 8+ boat, Adam Picard of the baseball squad and Bridget Lemire from softball share the UMass Athlete of the Week Award. The weekly UMass sports luncheon will be held Wednesday, April 16 at Noon in the Massachusetts Room of the Mullins Center with football head coach Mark Whipple and tennis head coach Judy Dixon serving as the guest speakers.

Beginning at Noon, the event is open to the public and features a $13 salad-to-dessert buffet. Free parking is available directly West of the Mullins Center and is accessible via Mullins Way. Following the sports luncheon, UMass Athletics is hosting a Basketball Champions Center Topping Off Ceremony at the South entrance to the Mullins Center, which is also open to the public, at 1:30 p.m.

The Varsity 8+ Boat took first place in the Grand Final of the Knecht Cup with a time of 6:47.65, two seconds ahead of the silver medalists from Bucknell to remain undefeated during the spring season. The Varsity 8+ also finished ahead of Boston College, Drexel, Old Dominion and Tulsa during the finale.

Picard hit a team-best .500 (7-for-14) over the four-game stretch last week, including a blistering .636 (7-for-11) over the Saint Louis series, that helped raise his season batting average 50 points. The right fielder had three multi-hit games on the weekend against the Billikens, going 3-for-3 with two RBI and 2-for-3 with a run scored in UMass' pair of wins in the series, while hitting 2-for-5 in the 2-1 loss in the series finale.

Lemire, a junior from Worcester, Mass., hit .583 for the week (7-for-12) with four home runs, 10 RBI and six runs scored as the Minutewomen posted a record of 3-1. In a Saturday doubleheader against St. Bonaventure, Lemire recorded three home runs, eight RBI and four runs scored. She recorded her first career multi-home run game in game one of the doubleheader.
