April 11, 2009
AMHERST, Mass. - UMass softball senior pitcher Brandice Balschmiter is one of 27 athletes who have accepted invitations to participate in the 2009 USA Softball Women's National Team Selection Camp, as announced by the Amateur Softball Association of America (ASA) on Friday. The National Team Camp runs June 8-12 in Chula Vista, Calif. "I am excited about having the opportunity to compete at the National Team level," Balschmiter said. "It is an honor to be invited to the training camp and get the chance to meet and learn from players and coaches there." Balschmiter, a four-year starter in the circle for head coach Elaine Sortino's Minutewomen, has a 108-31 career record, tying former National Team member and Olympic gold medalist Danielle Henderson's school record for wins in her last start on Friday at Saint Joseph's. She joined Henderson as the only pitchers in UMass history to record 1,000 career strikeouts on April 2 vs. Vermont. Balschmiter is one of three active pitchers to reach the milestone. On the schedule for the USA Softball Women's National team program are several International events including the World Cup of Softball presented by KFC in Oklahoma City, Okla. on July 16-20. The World Cup will feature the top four finishers from the 2008 Olympic Games including a gold medal game rematch between Japan and the United States. The 2009 Selection Camp attendees include: Monica Abbott - Salinas, Calif.
