Smith, Plourde Named UMass Co-Athletes of the Week
April 10, 2012
AMHERST, Mass. - Kyle Smith of the men's lacrosse team and Sara Plourde of the softball program were named the UMass Co-Athletes of the Week on Tuesday. They will be honored at the weekly UMass Sports Luncheon on Wednesday.
Smith, a junior attack from Longmeadow, Mass., led the No. 2 ranked Minutemen to a 14-3 win over Towson on Senior Day with game-highs in goals (4) and assists (2). His goal as time expired in the first half was the eventual game-winner and sparked the UMass offense going into the break. His four scores tied his career-high as the Minutemen improved to a program-best 10-0 on the season and 3-0 in Colonial Athletic Association play.
Plourde, a senior right-hander from Bristol, Conn., went 3-1 last week while allowing only four earned runs and nine base hits over 25.0 innings pitched. She also tossed her second solo perfect game and the 13th no-hitter of her career with a 10-0 win over St. Bonaventure on Sunday. She finished the week with 45 strikeouts to push her 2012 total to 304, the most in NCAA Division I this season.
