Katie Bettencourt Named UMass Athlete of the Week
April 2, 2013
The UMass Sports Luncheon Committee named softball standout Katie Bettencourt the UMass Athlete of the Week, Monday afternoon, following her performance in three home victories last week.
She will be recognized on Wednesday in the Massachusetts Room of the Mullins Center. The male and female Winter Scholar-Athletes will also be honored and field hockey coach Carla Tagliente will be the speaker. The event costs $11 to attend and free parking will be available behind the Mullins Center.
This is Bettencourt's first Athlete of the Week honor this season and second of her career (May 3, 2010).
The senior from Salem, N.H. led UMass to a 3-0 record as part of a season-best four-game win streak. She hit .556 with three runs, a home run and a team-best six RBI. She posted a 1.000 slugging pct and a .545 on-base pct. as she extended her hitting streak to five games.
Bettencourt reached base all four times against Boston College and drove in the eventual game-winning run in the fifth inning of the 8-7 win. She added a sac fly and a 2-run HR in the first St. Bonaventure game that erased a 4-3 deficit and put UMass ahead 5-4 in the 6-4 win, before collecting two more RBIs in a two-hit game in the second SBU game. In the SBU doubleheader alone, she hit .500 with five RBI and an 1.167 slugging pct.
