Cyndil Matthew Taken 10th Overall In National Pro Fastpitch Draft
April 1, 2013
AMHERST, Mass. - Massachusetts senior outfielder Cyndil Matthew was selected as the tenth overall selection by the NY/NJ Comets in the National Pro Fastpitch Draft on Monday night in Nashville.
Matthew was the third selection of the Comets, who will be playing their first season after assuming control of the Carolina franchise following the 2012 season. The team will be headquartered in Bridgewater, N.J., which is approximately 20 miles from Matthew's hometown of Westfield, N.J.
"I'm speechless to tell you the truth," Matthew said. "I'm just really happy and this is a dream come true. It doesn't get any better than getting to play the sport you love at the highest level and to be close to home."
Matthew was an Easton Second Team All-America selection as a junior in 2012 when she hit .409 to rank 37th in the nation. The slap-hitter was seventh in steals with a school-record 36, seventh in triples with six and 20th in runs per game.
"She has worked very, very hard to accomplish this goal," UMass head coach Elaine Sortino said. "She has consistently worked on her offensive game and become a great outfielder and I am so happy for her."
This season she is hitting .388 and has 14 stolen bases.
Other draftees by the Comets on Monday included Hofstra pitcher Olivia Galati, Oregon pitcher Jessica Moore, South Carolina utility player Samie Garcia and Virginia Tech first baseman Courtney Liddle.
Former UMass All-America Sara Plourde also had her rights picked up by the Comets during their transition in the off-season.
