March 23, 2010
AMHERST, Mass. - UMass softball pitcher Sara Plourde was recognized for her impressive week on Monday as she was named UMass Athlete of the Week and Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week. The Bristol, Conn. Native pitched all seven games for the No. 25 Minutewomen at the San Diego Classic II, striking out 96 batters in 48 1/3 innings pitched, including a school-record 22 Ks against No. 22 Texas A&M.
Plourde won four games on the week and allowed just four earned runs over the seven games for a 0.58 ERA. Opposing batters hit just .179 off the righthander.
Against Texas A&M, Plourde struck out a school-record 22 batters and held the Aggies hitless for 8 2/3 innings before allowing a single that droving in the winning run for the Aggies in the ninth with the International Tiebreaker rule in use. She broke Brandice Balschmiter's record of 19 strikeouts, set last season in an eight-inning win over George Washington. Plourde's old career-high was 18, set earlier this season in a no-hitter against Illinois State.
Plourde had four other double-digit strikeout outings, including a 17-K performance in a victory over San Diego, a 15-K outing with no earned runs allowed in a win over Kansas, and a 14-K shutout against Illinois-Chicago.
This is Plourde's third A-10 Pitcher of the Week honor this season and second straight. She was named the recipient on Feb. 15 and March 15 as well.
The sophomore is now 14-5 on the season with a 1.20 ERA and 236 strikeouts in 128 innings.
