The Massachusetts softball team will travel to Louisville, Ky., for the Red & Black Classic this weekend. The five-team event is hosted by Louisville at Ulmer Stadium and will also consist of Illinois State, Ohio and Ohio State

Minutewomen Fall To #24 Louisville At Combat Classic
UMass played their last game of the FIU Combat Classic in Miami, Fla. against #24 Louisville on Sunday, February 12 and lost 2-0 in a sixth inning surge by the Cardinals. Senior pitcher Sara Plourde (2-2) recorded twelve strikeouts, including three 3-pitch strikeouts on the day. The Minutewomen finished 3-2 at the tournament, defeating Illinois, Florida International, and Michigan State.

    A seventh inning come-back fell just short as the Massachusetts Softball Team (8-8-1) lost to Ohio State (12-9) 4-1 in the silver flight semifinal game of the adidas Invitational Sunday morning. Trailing 4-0 heading into the seventh inning, the Minutewomen mounted a furious rally. With one run already home on a Whitney Williams (pictured) RBI single, UMass loaded the bases with one out but OSU pitcher Jamee Juarez came in to save the game for starting pitcher Kim Reeder. UMass mustered just four hits in the game and left six runners on base. Brandice Balschmiter took the loss allowing four earned runs on eight hits and no walks while recording six strikeouts. UMass finishes the tournament with a 4-3 record.

    Meeks Homerun Gives UMass Softball Its First Victory
    A three run homer by Tiffany Meeks gave UMass Softball their first victory of the season, defeating Illinois State 4-3 on Saturday at the NFCA Leadoff Classic. The Minutewomen will take on Southern Illinois later in the afternoon. UMass had six hits and committed one error while Illinois State hit the ball four times and committed two errors.

    Louisville enters the weekend with an 8-6 mark after being rained out at last weekend's Louisville Slugger Invitational in Fullerton, Calif. Kelsi Jones leads the offense with a .378 average, two home runs and nine RBI. The Cardinals returned the duo of seniors Rachel Le Coq and Caralisa Connell in the circle. Le Coq is 2-3 with a 3.41 ERA, while Connell is 3-2 with a 3.43 ERA. The Cardinals were ranked in the top 20 in both polls in the preseason.

    The Lady Cardinals won the only previous game between the schools, taking a 2-0 decision in at the FIU Combat Classic during the opening weekend of the 2012 slate.

    The Bobcats enter this weekend with an impressive 12-8 record, but have lost seven-straight games, including both games of a doubleheader at Lipscomb, Wednesday night. Junior catcher Adrienne Gebele has led OU offensively, hitting .400 with two home runs and 10 RBI. Senior infielder Alexandria Basquez leads the team with 13 RBI. In the circle, sophomore Savannah Jo Dorsey has appeared in 18 of 20 games with a 9-5 record and a 2.47 ERA.

    Saturday morning's game with the Bobcats will be the first-ever on the diamond.

    Ohio State is 6-9 on the season after going 2-3 at the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic in Kissimmee, Fla. The Buckeyes defeated Bradley and Fordham on Saturday before falling to three ranked teams in the next two days - No. 23 Notre Dame, No. 1 Florida and No. 17/19 Missouri. OSU is led by junior Caitlin Conrad's .357 avg., nine RBIs, five doubles and nine runs, along with senior Evelyn Carrillo's .356 avg., nine RBIs and four doubles. In the circle, three different pitchers have seen significant time - junior Alex DiDomenico, senior Melanie Nichols and freshman Shelby Hursh. Among that group, DiDomenico leads in ERA (3.54) and has pitched a team-high 29.2 innings. Nichols, who pitched a complete-game shutout with a career-high nine strikeouts in a 1-0 win vs. Fordham, has a 3.66 ERA.

    The series with the Buckeyes is all knotted up at 3-3. OSU won the most recent game, 4-1, seven years ago in the semifinals of the USF adidas Invitational in Clearwater, Fla.

    UMass associate head coach Danielle Henderson was an assistant coach at OSU from 2011-12. The Buckeyes won 45 games and were 31-23 in 2012 during her time in Columbus.

    Illinois State enters the weekend with a 6-13 record. Last weekend the Redbirds went 1-4 at the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic (alongside Ohio State), falling to a quartet of top 25 teams in No. 25 Auburn (3-2), No. 23 Notre Dame (4-2), No. 17 Missouri (11-10),before collecting a 3-2 win against Nebraska-Omaha. ISU ended the event with a 2-0 loss to No. 4 Oregon. Jordan de los Reyes is batting .261 with 12 RBIs and four home runs. Pitcher Regan Romshek is 5-6 with 34 strikeouts and a 2.76 ERA. She has eight complete games in 71.0 innings pitched.

    ISU leads the series with UMass, 4-2. The Minutewomen have won two of the last three, including the only meeting last season, 4-3, at the NFCA Leadoff Classic. The Redbirds ended the Minutewomen's 2012 season with a 1-0, 9-inning elimination game victory at the NCAA Columbia (Mo.) Regional.
