Spring Is Here: Softball Practice Begins
Jan. 11, 2011
AMHERST, Mass. - It may be snowing outside, but spring is in the air inside the Boyden Gym. The UMass softball team began official practices on Monday as Elaine Sortino's Minutewomen begin their quest for 23rd Atlantic 10 Championship and a 21st NCAA Tournament berth.
The Minutewomen are in many ways a new-look bunch in 2011, with seven freshmen replacing seven graduated seniors from last season's 42-10-1 squad. Sortino does return a strong core however, including A-10 Pitcher of the Year and All-American Sara Plourde, A-10 Co-Player of the Year Katie Bettencourt, and All-Conference performers in catcher Meghan Carta and second baseman Kyllie Magill.
Be sure to check back in throughout the rest of the preseason for updates on the Minutewomen as they prepare for the season-opener on Feb. 18 in Boca Raton, Fla. against Penn State.
