COLUMBIA, Mo. - DePaul scored three runs in the sixth inning and held UMass to two hits as the Minutewomen dropped the opening game 3-0 in the NCAA Columbia Regional at University Field Friday.

UMass (38-12) saw its 22-game winning streak end and will now face Illinois State in a loser's bracket game on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. Eastern time. The Redbirds lost to Missouri, 6-0, in the second game Friday.

UMass saw its best scoring opportunity come in the top of the first when left fielder Cyndil Matthew led off with a single, stole second and reached third on a passed ball with one out. But the Minutewomen were unable to score Kyllie Magill struck out and Lindsey Webster grounded out.

Matthew's steal was her 35th this year and set the UMass single-season stolen base record, previously held by Tracey Osier in 1998. She also reached base for the 26th-consecutive game.

DePaul (36-20) was hitless until the sixth when third baseman Brittany Boesel led off with a single down the line at third that straddled the bag. Allie Braden followed with a walk and both runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Lynsey Ciezki drove in the first run on a single through the left side before Braden came home a batter later on a groundout.

Pitcher Kirsten Verdun drove in the final run on a single to make it a 3-0 Blue Demon lead. Verdun (27-13) earned the win as she struck out six with no walks and two hit batters.

Sara Plourde (36-10) took the loss after fanning seven with two walks. The senior was perfect through four innings and only surrendered a fifth-inning walk before the sixth inning.
