LAFAYETTE, La. - Three consecutive hits and a sacrifice fly by ASU's Phelan Wright brought in the winning run as No. 4 seed Massachusetts dropped to No. 2 seed Arizona State, 1-0, this afternoon in the second round of the NCAA Regional Softball Tournament. The Minutewomen slip to 53-12 on the season, while ASU improves to 42-18.

Senior ace Jennifer Hadley (Bristol, Conn.) and Sun Devil hurler Erica Beach controlled the game from the mound, giving up no runs through six innings.

Arizona State got on the board in the top of the seventh with singles by Jennifer Forner, Missy Hixon and Nichole Thompson. Wright then delivered a towering fly ball to right field that scored Forner and give the Sun Devils a 1-0 lead.

Beach retired the Minutewomen in order to close out the seventh and secure the ASU victory. She limited UMass to three hits while striking out eight to improve her record to 29-13.

Hadley scattered 11 hits and walked one, while fanning two. The Minutewomen stranded two runners on the day, while ASU stranded 10. Massachusetts drops into the losers bracket, where it will face the loser of the Louisiana State-Arizona State game.
