UMass Walks Off With Atlantic 10 Championship On Magill Home Run
May 12, 2012
ST. LOUIS - Kyllie Magill hit a two-out walk-off solo home run down the rightfield line to lift Massachusetts to a 3-2 win over George Washington in the title game of the 2012 Atlantic 10 Championship at the Billiken Sports Complex Saturday.
UMass (38-11) won its 23rd A-10 Tournament and will head into next week's NCAA Tournament with a 22-game winning streak. The Minutewomen will learn their postseason destination when the NCAA Selection Show is aired on ESPNU at 10 p.m. Eastern time on Sunday night. UMass will be making its 21st NCAA appearance and 17th in the last 18 years after missing out last season.
Magill's heroics were necessary when Tori Valos hit a two-run home run in the top of the seventh that tied the game at 2-2.
Sara Plourde (36-9) struck out 11 and took a no-hitter into the seventh before Valos broke it up. Plourde was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player after she went 3-0 with 33 strikeouts and batted a tournament-best .571 with a .741 slugging pct. The USA Softball Player of the Year finalist also moved into eighth place on the NCAA Division I career strikeout list with 1,641.
Cyndil Matthew was 3-for-4 against the Colonials and gave UMass a 1-0 lead in the first when she scored on a Lindsey Webster sacrifice fly. Matthew collected five hits, scored three runs and was perfect in three steal attempts to secure a spot on the all-tournament team.
For Magill, who was appearing in her 200th career game at UMass, it was her fourth homer this year as she was also named to the all-tournament team.
Heidi Penna (7-3) suffered the loss as she allowed three runs on seven hits with no strikeouts for George Washington (25-30).
