May 12, 2011
CHARLOTTE - A pair of two-out RBI hits in the bottom of the fourth inning by Jordan Storro and Cyndil Matthew broke a 1-1 tie and sent UMass softball (29-17) to a 3-1 victory over Saint Joseph's (29-15) in the second round of the Atlantic 10 Championship on Thursday in Charlotte. Kyllie Magill and the Hawks' Monica Aguilar traded solo home runs in the first and second innings, respectively. The No. 2 seed Minutewomen advance to face No. 1 seed Fordham on Friday at noon.
Sara Ploude (27-13) threw a complete game three-hitter with 13 strikeouts, the last of which came with runners on second and third to end the game. She allowed just one hit, Aguilar's leadoff home run in the top of the second, before Aguilar and Dana Bienek recorded back-to-back singles to start of the top of the seventh. Plourde struck out the next batter on a bunted foul third strike, and after a sacrifice bunt advanced the runners to second and third, struck out Shannon Kramer to end the game.
Audrey Boutin was 2-for-2 with a walk and a double. The senior singled up the middle with one out in the fourth of a tied game, 1-1. Stephanie Mayne followed with a walk and, with two outs, Storro roped an 0-2 pitch to right-center for a double, scoring Boutin with the go-ahead run. The next batter, Matthew, singled up the middle to bring in Mayne and make it a 3-1 game.
Magill gave UMass an early lead by crushing the second pitch of the bottom of the first inning over the fence in center for her third homer of the season, but Aguilar quickly answered in the top of the second with a solo shot to left, her sixth of the year.
Matthew finished the day 2-for-2 to run her season average to .333.
Erin Gallagher (22-9) took the loss for the Hawks, allowing three earned runs on six hits and three walks with six strikeouts in six innings.
