Massachusetts' Season Ends With 6-2 Loss To Dayton
May 8, 2014
BRONX, N.Y. - The Massachusetts softball team saw its season come to an end with a 6-2 loss to Dayton on the second day of the 2014 Atlantic 10 Softball Championship at Bahoshy Field Thursday.
UMass was unable to get its offense going in dropping its second game of the day following a 9-1 loss to No. 1 seed Fordham six hours earlier. The Minutewomen managed just four hits against the Flyers, who totaled 10 hits, including three doubles and two home runs.
Dayton got on the board in the third when Tiffany Ricks hit a homer to left center.
UMass answered in the bottom of the third when Cozza connected with a 2-run shot onto the tennis courts in left, giving the home team a 2-1 lead. It was the A-10 Rookie of the Year's fifth homer of the season.
Dayton regained the momentum and the advantage with three runs in the fourth. Gabrielle Snyder led off with a solo shot to right before Jordan Jennings and Kennedy Haynes each singled and came around to score on consecutive bases-loaded walks.
An inning later, Dana Trotta scored from first on a Haynes triple to stretch the margin to 5-2. Dayton added the final run in the sixth on a Kasi Vasquez RBI double.
Caroline Raymond (10-13) absorbed the loss while allowing four runs on six hits. Kayla English (17-13) earned the win as she struck out six in four innings.
UMass finished its first season under Interim Head Coach Kristi Stefanoni at 16-22-1 and qualified for the A-10 tourney - after missing the 2013 event - with a 9-6-1 league mark. The team had three seniors and at times started four freshmen and six underclassmen.
