Massachusetts Falls To Fordham, Faces Dayton In Elimination Game At 5 PM

BRONX, N.Y. - Fordham got home runs from Gabby Luety and Kayla Lombardo to break a 1-1 stalemate and defeat Massachusetts, 9-1, in a winner's bracket game at the 2014 Atlantic 10 Softball Championship at Bahoshy Field Thursday.
UMass (16-21-1) will now face Dayton (26-28) in an elimination game Thursday night at 5 p.m. Fordham (34-18) advances to play the Saint Louis-Saint Joseph's winner at Noon on Friday.
After UMass had tied the game at 1-1 on Lindsey Webster's RBI single to right in the top of the third, Fordham took the lead for good when Luety hit a 2-out, full count 3-run home run over the wall in left.
Two innings later, Elise Fortier walked and Lombardo followed with an opposite-field shot to right that put the top-seeded Rams ahead 6-1.
They added three more in the sixth to secure the 9-1 run-rule victory.
Webster and Tiffany Meeks had two hits each for the Minutewomen, who finished with seven total and left nine runners on base.
Caroline Raymond (10-12) took the loss after walking six and allowing 13 hits.
Starter Michele Daubman (16-10) worked four innings as she gave up five singles and one walk.
UMass defeated Dayton 7-2 in Wednesday's opening game after scoring six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
