May 5, 2012
BRONX, N.Y. - Massachusetts scored three runs in the fifth and seventh innings to defeat Fordham 6-1 at Bahoshy Field on Saturday.
With the win, UMass (33-11, 17-0 Atlantic 10) secured the No. 1 seed in next week's A-10 Tournament and claimed its 23rd conference regular-season title.
Sara Plourde (32-9) was solid in the circle as she struck out six and allowed one run on two hits. She also went 2-for-4 at the plate with a two-run homer ? her tenth of the season and ninth in league play.
Cyndil Matthew collected a game-high three hits, including a triple that ignited the rally in the fifth. Quianna Diaz-Patterson followed Matthew's hit with a walk and stolen base before Kyllie Magill had a two-out, two-run single to put UMass up 2-0. Magill, who had five hits in the two games against the Rams, scored a batter later on Lindsey Webster's base hit.
Fordham's Chelsea Polumbo got one of the runs back in the bottom-half with a leadoff solo home run to left.
The Minutewomen put the game out of reach in the seventh. Matthew singled, stole second and was driven in by a Diaz-Patterson single. Two outs later, Plourde belted a Taylor Pirone offering onto the tennis courts beyond the 25-foot netting above the left field fence.
The top five in the Minutewomen order combined for all nine hits.
Fordham (30-22, 14-4) suffered its third-consecutive home loss. Michelle Daubman (3-5) was the losing pitcher after she allowed three runs on six hits. She struck out four and walked one.
UMass will conclude the regular-season on Sunday at La Salle (9-38, 3-15). The doubleheader at West Campus Field is scheduled to begin at Noon and can be heard online at UMassAtheltics.com.
