Softball Wins A-10 Regular Season Title

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts softball team (33-13, 11-1 A-10) swept a doubleheader from George Washington this afternoon at the UMass Softball Complex, 18-0 and 13-0. Senior pitcher Kaila Holtz (North Vancouver, British Columbia) threw her first career perfect game in game one and was 5-5 at the plate with a grand slam and six RBI on the day. Freshman Jenna Busa (Lexington, Mass.) tossed a one-hitter in the nightcap for her first career shutout.
The Minutewomen scored 11 runs in the first inning of game one and cruised to an 18-0, five-inning win. Holtz breezed through the game, throwing just 38 pitches in five innings. She only threw four pitches to one batter and had just one, two-ball count. She struck out three batters in improving to 18-7 on the season. In the first inning, she had an RBI single to put UMass up 1-0 and hit her second grand slam of the season later in the frame. She went 4-4 with a career-high five RBI and three runs scored in the game.
Senior designated player Jessica Bartlett (Turners Falls, Mass.) was 2-4 with two RBI and two runs scored while senior Anna Perey (Chino Valley, Ariz.) was 2-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Senior Emily Robustelli (Stamford, Conn.) went 2-4 with a three RBI and two runs scored. Freshman Sharon DeMello (New Bedford, Mass.) had a hit in her first career at bat in the third inning.
In game two, UMass scored three runs in the first inning, six runs in the third and four more in the fourth en route to a 13-0 five-inning win. Busa improved to 3-0 on the season with her first career shutout. Pinch hitter Monica Foote singled sharply into left field with two outs in the fourth inning for the Colonials' only hit of the day. Busa walked one and struck out three.
Holtz was 1-1 with a RBI and a run scored in the nightcap before leaving the game. Freshman KJ Kelley (Rainier, Ore.) was 2-2 with three RBI and a run scored, while Perey went 1-2 with a career-high four RBI and a run scored. Robustelli was also 2-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
Freshman Shannon Houle (Charlton, Mass.) recorded her first career hit in the fourth inning.
The Minutewomen captured their 13th straight Atlantic 10 regular season title and will look for their ninth consecutive A-10 Tournament championship May 8-10 at the UMass Softball Complex. UMass, the No. 1 seed, will play fourth-seeded Fordham at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 8. Temple and Saint Joseph's will play in the second game of the day thirty minutes following the conclusion of game one.
