AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts softball team took two from Fordham University, 7-1 and 6-0, this afternoon on Senior Day at the UMass Softball Complex. The win improves UMass' record to 47-10 overall and 20-0 in the Atlantic 10. With the wins, UMass set a new school record with 47 wins in a season. The previous record of 45 wins was set in 1998 when UMass advanced to the Women's College World Series. The victories also extend Massachusetts' win streak to 32 games, which is the ninth longest streak all-time in the NCAA.

In game one, the Minutewomen scored four runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back, cruising to a 7-1 victory. Junior Brandi Cross (Diamond Bar, Calif.) hit a RBI single to score junior Emily Robustelli Stamford, Conn.). Sophomore Jamie Cahalan (Mesa, Ariz.) then hit a two-RBI triple, her fifth three-bagger of the season to plate senior Scooter Wheeler (Kingsburg, Calif.) and Cross. Junior Anna Perey (Chino Valley, Ariz.) followed with her first double of the season, scoring Cahalan.

The Rams scored their only run of the day in the second inning when Ivy Pollock singled home Amanda Martynkiewicz.

UMass added one run in the third and two in the fourth to earn the win. In the third, Cahalan doubled to right field, scoring freshman pinch runner KC Budrewicz (Buckland, Mass.). In the fourth, Robustelli scored on a dropped third strike and Wheeler doubled home Cross.

Junior Kaila Holtz (North Vancouver, British Columbia) improved her record to 21-5 as she scattered seven hits and two walks, while striking out three. Fordham's Carol Fischer (10-17) took the loss as she allowed five hits and three walks over four innings, while striking out two.

 

 

In game two, UMass took a one run lead through five before using a five run sixth inning to blow the game wide open.

Cahalan hit a double to right center field in the fourth to score Holtz. In the sixth, senior Teri Rooney (Visalia, Calif.) singled through the right side, scoring freshman Hilary Puglia (Stoneham, Mass.). Cross then hit a three-run home run to put UMass up, 6-0.

Senior Jennifer Hadley (Bristol, Conn.) improved her record to 21-5 as she limited the Rams to four hits, while striking out three. Fordham's Jamie Giguere (4-9) took the loss as she gave up eight hits and three walks, while striking out none.

The Minutewomen and Rams round out the series with a noon game tomorrow. It will mark the final home game for seniors Ashley Bakken (Phoenix, Ariz.), Hadley, Rooney and Wheeler.
