Softball Falls To UConn 1-0

STORRS, Conn. - The University of Massachusetts softball team (23-11) fell to the University of Connecticut, 1-0 this afternoon at the UConn Softball Stadium. The Huskies scored an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh inning for the win. UMass stranded 11 runners on base as its 14-game winning streak came to an end.
Maggie Arbogast led off the seventh inning by reaching on an error by UMass short stop Emily Robustelli (Stamford, Conn.). She then moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Kim Castner. Elisa Brinkworth followed with a single to left field delivering the winning run.
Following her no-hitter against Rhode Island on Sunday, sophomore pitcher Kelli Arnold (Kalama, Wash.) took the tough loss dropping her record to 10-5 on the season. She held the Huskies hitless for 4.2 innings and allowed only two for the game. Arnold walked two and struck out five.
The Minutewomen left 11 runners on base this afternoon, including leaving the bases loaded twice. UMass' best chance to score came in the top of the fifth when it loaded the bases with one out. Senior Kaila Holtz (North Vancouver, British Columbia) hit a slow roller to third forcing senior Anna Perey (Chino Valley, Ariz.) at home for the second out, while freshman KJ Kelley (Rainier, Ore.)struck out swinging to end the threat.
Following a leadoff double by sophomore Hilary Puglia (Stoneham, Mass.) in the sixth and a walk to sophomore Denise Denis (Middle Grove, N.Y.), UMass had runners at first and second with nobody out, but the next three batters were retired to end the threat. The inning ended when Jennifer D'Angelo made a sliding catch in right field on a soft liner off the bat of Robustelli.
Massachusetts returns to action tomorrow when it hosts Boston College at 5:00 p.m.
