AMHERST, Mass. - Massachusetts (18-11-1) pounded out 23 hits in a doubleheader sweep over Central Connecticut (7-18), 8-0 and 9-1, Wednesday afternoon at the UMass Softball Complex. Junior Kristi Stefanoni (Columbus, N.J.) was 2-for-4 with five RBI in the two games. She hit her first career home run in game one. In game one, UMass sent 12 batters to the plate in the first inning and scored seven runs. The highlight of the inning was a three-run home run by Stefanoni. It was her first career home run. UMass also scored runs in the inning on RBI singles by senior Denise Denis (Middle Grove, N.Y.), freshman Lauren Proctor (Redmond, Wash.) and freshman Sarah Hurd (Warwick, R.I.). UMass scored another run in the inning on a double steal. Denis stole second and junior KJ Kelley (Rainier, Ore.) stole home.

Central Connecticut starting pitcher Erin Munroe lasted just two-thirds of the first inning. She gave up seven runs on six hits and four walks. She was relieved by Sarah Mardis. Mardis did not allow a run and was then relived by Samantha Keltos at the beginning of the fourth inning.

UMass ended the game against Keltos in the bottom of the fifth. Morin led off with a triple to right field. She then scored when senior pinch hitter Jasmine Edwards (Queens Village, N.Y.) singled through the left side.

Senior pitcher Barb LaFogg (Williamsburg, Mass.) went the distance for the Minutewomen. She scattered three hits and did not walk a batter. LaFogg fanned nine. In game one, both Morin and sophomore Candice Molinari (Glendora, Calif.) were 2-for-2 at the plate, Morin also scored two runs.

In game two, it was the Blue Devils who got on the board first with a run in the top of the third off UMass junior pitcher Jenna Busa (Lexington, Mass.). Pam Shifrin recorded a RBI single to left field.

UMass came back to take the lead in the fourth. Back-to-back one-out singles by Proctor and Morin put two on. After pinch hitter Amanda Acampora (Orange, Conn.) struck out, Stefanoni singled up the middle to drive in two runs and give UMass a 2-1 lead. Senior Hilary Puglia (Stoneham, Mass.) followed with a two-run home run to left-center giving Massachusetts a 4-1 lead.

The Minutewomen kept up the offense in the fifth. Kelley and Denis led off the frame with back-to-back singles. A single by Sulick to right-center scored Kelley from second and gave UMass a 5-1 lead. Proctor came up next and had a RBI double and then Morin followed with a two-run triple. Both balls were in the same spot to the left-centerfield gap. Morin then scored the ninth UMass run on a wild pitch.

Busa allowed one run on one hit and three walks. She struck out six.
