Amherst, Mass. - The Massachusetts softball team swept Maine in this afternoon's non-conference twinbill, 3-1 and 6-2. The Minutewomen have now won eight games in a row and 33-straight home games.

Senior Scooter Wheeler (Kingsburg, Calif.) hit an RBI single through the left side to score senior Teri Rooney (Visalia, Calif.) in the first frame and the Minutewomen never looked back as they ran away with the 3-1 game one victory.

UMass added to its lead in the second when sophomore Jamie Cahalan (Mesa, Ariz.) opened the inning with her fourth double of the season. She advanced to third on a single by junior Anna Perey (Chino Valley, Ariz.) and scored when the Black Bears threw to second base on a Perey steal.

Maine got a run on the board in the fourth inning when senior Leigh Ann Hlywak homered over the left field fence.

The Minutewomen retaliated in the fifth, scoring the final run of the game when junior Emily Robustelli (Stamford, Conn.) scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Kaila Holtz (North Vancouver, British Columbia).

Senior Jennifer Hadley (Bristol, Conn.) recorded the win, her tenth of the season, as she scattered three Maine hits, while striking out seven.

In game two, the Black Bears jumped out to the quick 2-0 advantage, stringing together three singles.

The Minutewomen answered in the fourth, tying the score on RBI singles by Holtz and sophomore Nicole Wilson (Gaithersburg, Md.).

UMass scored four more runs in the fifth frame on four hits and a Maine error. RBI singles by Holtz, Wilson and a failed Black Bear pick-off plated Wheeler and gave the Minutewomen the 6-2 win.

Freshman Kelli Arnold (Kalama, Wash.) earned her fourth win of the season as she allowed five hits, no walks and struck out seven.

UMass improves to 23-10 overall while Maine dips to 12-18. The Minutewomen return to Atlantic 10 play this weekend as they take on St. Joseph's for a three-game series.
